Kavel Rafferty is a self-taught, multi-disciplinary artist based in Margate. Working in collage, painting and assemblage art, she explores the possibilities of found materials, including old magazines, postcards and other appropriated images. She finds value and beauty in discarded materials, seeing her work as a frugal and relevant response to our time of mass production and waste.
Under the banner of Projects Kavel Rafferty, Kavel manages two gallery spaces in Margate. The first is a gallery and her own studio located at the iconic Post Office Margate building, 22-23 Cecil Square. The second venue is a larger gallery space in Cliftonville, situated at 231 Northdown Road, Margate, Kent. Kavel is dedicated to championing the work of women, LGBTQ+, outsider and untrained artists, alongside showcasing her own work at her gallery spaces in Margate. Her approach to curating is influenced by a post-punk DIY ethos, resulting in exhibitions that are unpretentious and exuberant. Inspired by the community she lives in, Kavel's program reflects her down-to-earth attitude. Her shows are accessible, egalitarian and inclusive.
Kavel works with Margate Pride and Power of Women Thanet as art advisor, curator and producer.
