Art and Technology Residency: Dr Edward Kelly
Sound artist Dr Edward Kelly is one of three residents on The Margate School's Art and Technology Residency. His work encompasses interactive sound art, digital music, electronics, and software design for audio. His work has been published and performed at international conferences and journals, and after moving to Margate in 2020, he has been chosen to participate in the residency programme at the Margate School, where he is working on an interactive multi-channel sound installation to be exhibited in March 2022.
Dr Kelly studied Electronic Music with Javier Alvarez, Ian Dearden, and Martin Parry at the University of Hertfordshire in the 1990s. He went on to complete a PhD in composition at the University of East Anglia. For over ten years he taught and mentored students in Fine Art (Digital) at Camberwell College of Arts, and provided both academic and technical services to students.
During the weekend of 12th and 13th March, the three artists-in-residence will host a variety of art and technology workshops as part of their projects. Workshops will include an introduction to mixed reality with the use of 3D workflows and projection mapping. The aim will to create a 3D scene from scanned objects, then enhance it with animation and projection mapping. More details will be announced shortly, subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date.
Dr Kelly has proposed the following two workshops for these dates:
Record, Edit, Repeat - an introduction to recording, editing and mixing techniques
Sensor-driven Synthesis and Experiments in Pure Data
Learning and providing an open and transparent platform for learning is at the heart of the School’s endeavour. A discipline, including but not exclusively art, is a vehicle for learning. The opportunity to cross, alter, merge and indeed play with disciplines will help in the accessibility of learning opportunities, innovation and the development of what might be called a learning community eager to nurture a creative ecology culture.
