Student profile - Dr Ian Jones

Introducing Dr. Ian Jones from the Visual Communication programme: Design, Society, Nature. Read on to learn more about Dr.Jones.

Dr. Ian Jones is a retired sociologist, who has studied, researched and taught at several UK universities and abroad - at MIT, in Hong Kong, and South Africa. He is also a qualified psychotherapist with a local private practice. In 2021 he published a book - Pestilence and Prejudice: Disease, Racism, and Blame – written during the pandemic.

Since moving from the Midlands to Margate, he has worked with Turner Contemporary on the Journeys with The Waste Land exhibition, led a local T.S. Eliot reading group, exhibited work and performed in several art shows based around Eliot's poetry, and given readings and lectures on Eliot's life and work.

The one-year Design, Society, Nature course has encouraged experiment, provided criteria for self-evaluation, improved design skills, and developed scope, competence and confidence – particularly with creative software. It has been a challenging but very positive and worthwhile experience.

It remains to be seen what’s next …… which is quite exciting!

Dr.Jones will be showing examples of his photo-editing and photomontage work at the upcoming show for the Visual Communication students, ‘8 Journeys’.
